What is Reiki? How Can This Treatment Benefit You?

Updated: Mar 10

The meaning if the word Reiki is 'Universal Life Force Energy' and was rediscovered in the late 1800's by Dr Mikao Usui a Tendai Buddhist Monk from Japan. It is a Japanese technique that is used to heal physical and mental trauma, and to support mental clarity and spiritual well-being.

The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words; the word "rei" refers to a higher intelligence that permeates all living and non-living entities and guides the inherent functioning of the universe. The word "ki" refers to the nonphysical energy that flows through everything that is alive, including plants, animals, and human beings - because of this, ki is also often called "life force energy," and is also known as Qi or Chi. The combination of these two words is what defines Reiki as "Universal Life Force Energy".

Reiki is an ancient form of healing that is drawn by the receiver, it travels via the Reiki Therapist and clears our energy channels in order to create well being, relaxation and boost our immune system. As a non-invasive - fully clothed treatment, Reiki triggers our natural healing abilities in order to improve and maintain our health. Reiki can bring great stress relief and relaxation to the recipient. When we are relaxed and stress-free, we have a better ability to restore our natural healing state. Reiki can provide any additional energy required to recover from illness, dis-ease, anxiety and depression as well as any other ailments. Reiki is great for people that are also in good health as it increases our body's built-in defences and can open the energy channels to more confidence and harmony when dealing with everyday events, it can also provide a very positive outlook on life.

Other benefits of receiving a Reiki Treatment include a better sleep pattern, reduction in blood pressure, pain relief for injuries or problems such as asthma, eczema or headaches. Reiki can also assist the body in clearing itself from toxins and reducing some of the side effects of drug therapy after surgery or chemotherapy.

Reiki for Bereavement and Grief

At sometime in our lives we will encounter the loss of someone who has played a huge part in our lives and this can be devastating. When we are grieving for a persons passing we go through a wide range of different emotions. This can be anything from anger, guilt, loneliness or a feeling that we cannot cope without that person in our lives. Everyone is different in how they feel and what they feel but going through these emotions puts our energies at the lowest point. Reiki works to facilitate the healing process of someone who has suffered emotional trauma due to any kind of loss of someone they loved or someone close to them. At a time of grieving Reiki can be of great benefit to the bereaved. The Universal Life Force Energy or Reiki can heal the mind, body and spirit and its emotions. Reiki aids in the creation of inner peace and the ability to help us move forward in our lives, therefore Reiki can have a very positive effect at a very negative time in our life.

Reiki for Anxiety and Depression

One of the most beneficial features of Reiki is the absence of contraindications for the recipient. The results of therapy can be instant and very beneficial in the short term as well as long term. The recipient will always notice an improvement in their anxiety levels, because the Reiki treatment achieves a state of relaxation and provides greater wellbeing, that is why it is an excellent technique for treating anxiety, stress or depression.

According to a Reiki study carried out by The Hartford Hospital, USA there is a great significance of Reiki Healing when it comes to the treatment of anxiety and depression. The study gathered participants to test the effects of Reiki on anxiety and depression reduction; the participants of the study were divided into three groups; the Reiki treatment group, the distant-Reiki treatment group and the non-Reiki treatment group. The groups which were treated using the Reiki technique were seen to have a significant decrease in the symptoms of their anxiety and depression and the reduction was much higher than the result acquired by the non-Reiki group.

The results stated that Reiki can significantly reduce or even cure anxiety and depression in adults. So according to these studies, Reiki could be a solution for anyone who suffers with anxiety and depression especially because the treatment does not involve medication or cause any pain to the recipient.
